National Arena League, Round 2, 11 November

HC Report

Leander is on target to gain promotion to the Premier Division. This round was seeded based on results from the 1st round and so the competition was tougher. With a few swimmers being unavailable, we reshuffled the team a bit and tried swimmers in different events, gave a chance to some new swimmers so as to find the best team for the Final round.

Great teams from Bexley (BSC) and Borough of Harrow (BoH) pushed us all the way to the end. We clinched the lead after first 10 events with BoH 7 and BSC just 8 points behind. After 18 events, all three clubs were separated by only 7 points. Half way through we pulled the gap to 14 points and won by 27 points in the end swimming some fantastic races. We again avoided DQ’s. In this very tense competition, all our swimmers stayed cool and focused on their own races and skills. (Only 3 out of 8 clubs managed the same feat). Continue reading

Winter Regional Championships (LC)

London Swimming Winter Championships were held Long Course this year. The event took place on 4th/5th November 2017 at London Aquatic Centre, Stratford. This was a great opportunity for our swimmers to get some LC experience early in the season.

This year we had 15 qualifiers from 3 squads (Gold, PLY and PLB) who qualified for 76 events. Our performance has really stepped up!

Leander swimmers made it into 15 finals and gained 5 medals.

Our medallists were:

  • Kirstin – Silver in 50 and 100 Fly
  • Tyler – Bronze in 50 Free and 50 Back
  • Jack – Bronze in 100 Fly

Special mention goes to our younger swimmers, Lily (still 13y) and Kiera (13y), first for qualifying in the 16& Under age group and also for swimming fantastic races.

  • Lily was 2nd fastest 14y old in 400 Free, 4th fastest in 100 Free and made it top ten in 100 and 200 Back as well.
  • Kiera was 5th fastest 13y old in 50 Back and made it top ten in 200 Back.

9 Age Group and 1 Open Club records were broken at this meet:

  • Megan and Jack broke 3 records
  • Tyler broke 2 Age Group records and one All Time Open record
  • Lily broke 1 Age Group record

Although this was not a peak meet of the season Leander swimmers set 29 Personal Best time at this meet.

Official results are here:

Well done to all swimmers and their coaches. Our next goal is NAL 2nd round where we aim to win again and solidify our position for the Final in December.

National Arena League Round 1, 14th October Hatfield

Head Coach’s Report

This is our second year in the first division and we have a clear target – to gain promotion to the Premier Division. We started our quest with a win on Saturday and what a win that was!

Although we knew most of the clubs there were two clubs just joining the division, and we weren’t sure what to expect. After the first 10 events we were two points ahead of the particularly strong team from Bishop’s Stortford (who had come from the Premier Division) and 11 points ahead of Bexley (promoted from the Second Division).

We kept the lead and pulled a gap of 16 points by event number 34, with Bishop’s Stortford in second. We extended the lead by swimming some of our best races and avoiding DQ’s – and won overall by 28 points.

Leander swimmers came first in 14 races. Both the girls and boys 11-and-under relay teams in IM and Free relays were unbeaten. Leander swimmers set 20 new Personal Best times and set 5 new club records. There were 2 new Open All Time records broken: by Tyler Podmore (100 Free and 100 Back). These last records were also new Age Group Records for 18+. Other record breakers were Ben Findlay (100 FC), Saskia Wilkinson (50 BS) and Sonny Thomas (50 FC).

Final results:

  • Leander 295p
  • Bishop’s Stortford 267p
  • Bexley 247p

We await results from Gala 1 (we were in Gala 2) for the overall league table. Results will appear here.

Well done everyone!

Trials Q & A

How many swimmers will you be trialling?

We have up to 30 places at each trial – this is so we can give proper attention to the swimmers in front of us. Once we reach that number we will close the list. If you can offer us alternative dates on the list that would be great.

How will the process work?

Fill in the form and let us know which session(s) you can do. We will be in touch to confirm which session you have been allocated. We will give you contact details for any issues you may face.

When the day arrives, just bring your child to swim! We will show them what they need to do.

Where and when will the trials be held?

Trials will be held on Saturday 4th November 17 at Ernest Bevin College, Tooting, SW17 7DF. Please use the sports complex entrance which is through the car park.

Registration is at 12.00, swimming will start at 12.15 and we aim to finish at 1.00pm

What are the trials looking for?

Our experienced coaches will be looking for all fundamentals needed for an entry level to a competitive swimming. The coaches will not assess the speed but will look for technically competent swimmers who have the ability to swim for 60 minutes n in a Leander training session. Swimmers will need to demonstrate the basics of all 4 strokes for a minimum distance of 25m, competitive starts of the blocks and tumble turns. If you are not sure have a look at our video.

Can parents/guardians stay and watch?

Yes, there are bench seats along the side of the pool. It’s important to allow your swimmer to focus on the trial though. You may want to wait outside – there is space – if you think it will work better for them.

What do we need to bring?

Competitive swimming training kit – fitted trunks for boys (not board shorts), one-piece costumes for girls (not bikini), a swim hat, goggles.

What if my child is really nervous?

We train swimmers to compete and nerves are fine. They’re part of a swimmer’s life. Tell them to focus on what they’re asked to do and do their best.

What is my child is ill on the day?

Please use your judgement. If it’s simply a matter of feeling a bit under the weather, please still attend. Tell the team when you arrive. If it’s not possible to swim (your child has a temperature) please contact us as soon as possible to let us know. We will do our best to accommodate your child at a later date, but we cannot guarantee this will be possible.

Do you have a sibling policy?

No. Leander is a competitive swimming club and decisions are made on ability.

What if my child is just older than this age bracket?

If you feel your child is good enough to trial having watched our video, but they are just older than 9, then please get in touch.

What if my child is not selected?

We will give you feedback on the day. Some swimmers who are near the mark may be recommended to the Academy section of the Club. Or it may be a case of developing skills and coming to a future trial.

What if my child is selected?

We will send you a formal invitation to join the club with details of swimming times. We will also ask for a commitment from parents//guardians to volunteer time to help run the club. This is flexible but important, as we’re entirely administered by volunteers.

MK League 2017 final round

Coach Caroline Findlay writes: I am delighted and proud of the success of our team swimming in the final round of the Milton Keynes Junior League at Guildford. Although it was the last round of the 2017 Milton Keynes League, it was our swimmer’s first gala of the new season.

Our team were up against strong opposition from Guildford, Wycombe, Ealing, Oxford and Teddington and came  4th – what a great start for so many of our junior swimmers, who took 5 first and 6 second places! In the league overall we finished a fantastic fifth.

Thank you swimmers for representing us so well, showing that Leander is a serious competitive club and a strong force. I am sure you all had a great time. It is an honour to be picked to represent the Club in these League galas and it is rewarding to see your hard work paying off.

Thank you too to the parents that attended the gala, both officials and spectators, and to the coaches for their hard work coaching the swimmers.

Final scores: Guildford 257, Wycombe 175, Ealing 161, Leander 144, Teddington 143, Oxford 130
