Four new swimmers make Nationals, a Regional OW Champion, 4 medals for Leander

Head Coach Martin Jurco writes: Five Leander swimmers took part in the London Region Open Water Championships in Surrey Docks. This is a growing sport with 90 age group swimmers across the capital entering this year. The water temperature was 19 degrees – about 10 degrees lower than the pools we swim in. The races are long, cold and tough: the winner of the 3km took 47min and 10 seconds. The wind gusting above 30mph made the water very choppy and blew many swimmers off course.

Our swimmers competed in 3 different age groups. Imogen came 10th in the 14y old girls 1500m. Our 15y old girls dominated the 3km race, taking gold, silver and bronze. Congratulations to Jemima: our first Open Water Regional Champion. Enerel came second just 0.5sec behind and Lucy third further 4 seconds down. Megan came third in the 16y old girls event. All four medallists have now qualified for the National Open Water Championships. Continue reading

MK Junior League 2016 Round 2

MKL16Rd2Hemel Hempstead hosted the second round of the MK Junior League, and we saw some amazing races with everyone swimming well. Team spirit was evident with all swimmers cheered loudly home. We secured 13 first places and 12 seconds, finishing the gala in second place overall.

A special mention for Salia Bouyer who stepped in at the last minute and helped the 9 year old girls swim a brilliant relay.

Thanks to our officials on the night: Nathalie, Nicolette and Marcus as well as our band of parents who supported from the balcony.

Please check your emails to see if you’ve been selected for the final round on Saturday 10 September.

Good luck to our 4 national qualifiers!

GoodLuckOur Thursday session got interrupted as Leander had a reason to celebrate. Our four National qualifiers (Kirstin, Jordan, Megan and Tyler) were given Good Luck Cards signed by all Leander swimmers and coaches. We are very proud of their achievement and we showed them how much it means to all of us.

Good Luck guys! Swim fast at the Nationals!

Club Chair Lorraine writes: The Academy Gala was a great success. It was lovely to see our little swimmers on the blocks, stars in the making, plenty of noise and cheering. It is such a fabulous introduction to competitive swimming – if you didn’t enter this year make sure you remember to next year.

After the racing we even had time for a fun swim, followed by 4 hours of football in the lovely JAGS grounds. I am sure there were some very sleepy children by the end of the day (and a few sleepy adults). The food was amazing, and so much of it, we were blessed by the weather.

This year’s trophy winners:

  • The Mole Cup (awarded for commitment, dedication and hard work, and Role Model behaviour) – Cecilia Alfonso-Eaton (Yellow Squad)
  • The Squad Trophies are awarded for work ethic, commitment, and attendance and go to:
    Bronze – Thomas Walkinshaw
    Silver – Jacob Taylor
    Gold – Jack Banasiak
    Blue – Khaled Oozeer
Yellow – Lucy Atkinson (with an amazing 454 hours of swimming so far this year – that’s commitment!)

Most successful swimmers:

  • Ben Umunna Junior (14 & Under age group) – Kirstin Harvie
  • Ben Umunna Senior (Over 15 age group) – Megan Whittaker

The Eddie Lucas Shield (for the most inspiring swimmer, voted for by the swimmers themselves) – Cecilia Alfonso-Eaton

MK Junior League 2016 Round 1

MKJL16R1_1Caroline Findlay writes: On Saturday 4 June Leander hosted the first round of this year’s MK junior league. We had been drawn against some stiff opposition – 3 of the top 6 clubs in last year’s competition including the winners.

Our team was made up of swimmers pulling on Leander hats in competition for the first time alongside the more experienced who had taken part in the previous 2 years.
There were lots of fantastic swims and a number of personal bests with several top 3 finishes. Well done to all!
So we now prepare for round two… Please keep practising, giving 100% in training and ensure that if asked to represent your club that you are available.
Thank you to all parents and volunteers who made the gala run so smoothly.
We are One team with One dream
Go Leander!!!
